French President Nicolas Sarkozy and Italian Prime Minister Romano Prodi met Friday in the city of Nice for a summit meeting devoted primarily to energy, immigration and security, French media reported.

In addition to talks between the two leaders, the 16th French-Italian summit, and the first since Sarkozy's election in May, will also include a ministerial meeting on defence and security.

Among the thorny issues to be discussed at the summit is that of the Italian energy giant Enel's ambitions to enter the French energy market.

In February 2006, then-prime minister Dominique de Villepin sparked a diplomatic row between Paris and Rome when he proposed the merger between French energy suppliers Suez and GDF to keep Enel from making a bid for GDF.
