A small private security group in Iraq known as the Crescent Security Group is under scrutiny after the 2006 kidnapping of four Americans and an Austrian.
The kidnapping occurred last November during an attack on a convoy near the southern city of Basra. The five men have not been heard from since, The Washington Post reported.
Several military personnel told the Post Crescent was known for cutting corners -- including sending convoys out with insufficient protection.
Crescent has been under the microscope since the kidnappings, and officials have found a disturbing history of misconduct by the firm, the Post said.
The U.S. military last March barred Crescent from U.S. bases after the company was found with weapons that were contraband for private security companies, the newspaper said.
A search around Crescent living quarters reportedly turned up illegal steroids and more contraband weapons.
