Turkish State Minister and Deputy Premier Abdullatif Sener stated that "they aimed to change the presidential election system without making any changes regarding the powers of the president".
Appearing on private NTV channel, Sener said, "the president who is elected by the parliament in the actual regime, will be elected by popular vote after the amendment. The powers of the president will stay the same".
Underscoring that the parliament could not carry out the election process properly, Sener said electing the president by popular vote would solve the problems.
Replying to a question on the "proxy for presidency" as well, Sener said Article 102 of the Turkish constitution, which envisages that the current president shall continue with his post till a new president is elected, was applicable to the current situation.
