Ali Meshkini, one of the most senior Ayatollahs in Iran, died on Friday at the age of 86 after a long illness, the Fars news agency reported.

Ali Meshkini, one of the most senior Ayatollahs in Iran, died on Friday at the age of 86 after a long illness, the Fars news agency reported.

Meshkini was head of the Experts' Assembly, Iran's highest clerical body, as well as Friday prayer leader in the religious city of Qom, south of the capital Tehran.

Meshkini will be replaced in the Experts Assembly by former President Akbar Hashemi-Rafsanjani.
