Slovakia promises Turkey's PM easier visa regime

Slovakian Premier Robert Fico extended support to Turkey's accession to the EU, noting that all candidates meeting membership criteria should be admitted to the union.

At a joint press conference held Tuesday with Turkish Premier Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara, Fico said Slovakia believed expansion was beneficial for the EU. He said they did not belive that expansion would exhaust the union.

Fico who invited Erdogan to Slovakia said relations between the two countries should focus on areas of economy and energy.

Referring to the renewal of the agreement between the two countries on reciprocal protection and encouragement of investments, the Slovakian Premier said his country was suitable for foreign investments and said Turkish investments were welcome.

Fico said he was accompanied by a group of Slovakian businessmen noting that interaction between the two countries would contribute to commercial relations.

Replying to Erdogan's call to ease the visa regime, Fico promised to do everything within their reach, adding however that there was not much they could do as they were a part of the Schengen system.

Fico said the EU ought to understand the key role of Turkey in energy security and reasoned that the energy chapter ought to be opened to negotiation in accession talks with Turkey.
