Slovakia's PM in Turkey says backs EU enlargement

Slovakia's Prime Minister Robert Fico, who is in Turkey for talks, said Tuesday that his country backs EU enlargement, adding that every European country should have the right to join the 27-nation bloc if necessary obligations are fulfilled.

Fico and a group of Slovak businessmen attended a business meeting organized by the Union of Chambers & Commodity Exchanges of Turkey (TOBB) to gather them with Turkish businessmen.

Speaking at the meeting, Fico said he does not agree with the view that EU can not afford more enlargement.

Fico said EU member Slovakia welcomes the energy chapter, which is soon to be opened, in accession negotiations between Turkey and EU. He said Turkey would play a crucial role in Europe's energy security and thanked Turkey for its unconditional support to Slovakia's NATO bid.

Fico also called on Turkish businessmen to invest in his country and stated that Turkish firms could have opportunities in Slovakia's energy, automotive, engineering and chemicals industries.

Turkish Finance Minister, who was another speaker at the meeting, thanked Fico for his support to Turkey in its EU bid and said that Turkey made significant progress in recent years, especially in political, economic and social transformation.

"I believe that Turkey will be a country to provide added value to EU and I think member states will appreciate it," Simsek said.

Simsek also said that Turkish and Slovak companies could join forces to take business opportunities in third countries.
