Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero has announced a baby bonus of 2,500 euros (3,980 dollars) for every newborn child, press reports said Wednesday.
"Spain, in order to keep advancing, needs more families with more children," Zapatero told parliament in his state of the nation address.
The bonus will be given for all babies, including those of legal immigrants, independently of the family's income.
The measure aims at raising the birthrate of 1.37 children per woman. Financial policies to encourage women to have children exist in many European countries.
