In occupied Kashmir, martyrdom anniversary of prominent liberation leader, Muhammad Maqbool Butt was marked today by complete strike and protest demonstrations.
All business establishments and offices remained closed and Transport was off the road. Call for the strike was given by the All Parties Hurriyet Conference and the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front.
It was on this day in 1984 that Muhammad Maqbool Butt was hanged in Tihar Jail in New Delhi for his leading role in Kashmir liberation struggle. His dead body was buried in the Jail premises.
The Democratic Freedom Party organized a protest demonstration outside the UN Observers' Office at Sonawar in Srinagar. A memorandum presented on behalf of the party President, Shabbir Ahmed Shah demanded that mortal remains of the martyred leader be handed over to his relatives to burry them in the martyrs' graveyard in Srinagar. The JKLF Chairman, Muhammad Yasin Malik told newsmen that Muhammad Maqbool Butt's martyrdom was a landmark in the history of Kashmir movement.
Indian troops arrested over a dozen people in Maisuma area of Srinagar, when they tried to take out a protest demonstration. Scuffles between demonstrators and police personnel were witnessed at many places in the city.
In Rawalpindi, sit-in was organized by Jammu and Kashmir liberation front outside the UN Observers' Office. The Secretary General of the party, Muhammad Rafiq Dar handed over a memorandum on the occasion.
Indian troops in their continued acts of state terrorism martyred two youth at Gurmul in Doda district. Two Indian soldiers were killed and a Mujahid martyred in a clash in Mahoor area of Udhampur. One civilian each was killed in Qazigund and Mendhar. Dead body of a ten-year boy was recovered in Kokernag.
In Rajouri, two women became victim of gang rape by Indian troops at Kotranka village. Over fifty Kashmiri detainees went on hunger strike in Kot Bhalwal jail in Jammu to protest against occupation authorities' denial to produce them in the courts.
