"The government will receive tomorrow 18 Jordanian citizens who were jailed in Syria for various reasons," state-run Petra news agency quoted Judeh as saying.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad ordered their release as part of an agreement struck in November 18 talks in Damascus with Jordan's King Abdullah II, he said.

After that meeting, Judeh had told reporters in Amman that Syria had agreed to release an unspecified number of Jordanian prisoners.

According to local news reports, there are 250 Jordanians jailed in Syria. Reasons for their detention are not known.

Judeh said a joint committee is following up on the fate of the other Syrian and Jordanian detainees held in the two countries in a bid to release all the prisoners.
