At least 12 people were hurt in the explosion, which took place near the governor's office in the city of Van, security sources said. Emergency vehicles have been rushing the injured to hospital.

More than 30,000 people have died in two decades of conflict between Turkey's army and Kurdish separatist rebels, based in the country's east.

Violence has risen in the past year after militants from the Kongra-Gel, formerly known as the PKK (Kurdistan People's Party), announced they were abandoning a five-year-old unilateral truce.

The EU, which Turkey is seeking to join, has urged Ankara to alleviate poverty among the Kurds and give them greater rights.
