Turkey closes 3 shipyards over deaths

Turkish Labor and Social Security Ministry decided to partially close three shipyards in Tuzla, Istanbul within the framework of an ongoing investigation launched upon sudden deaths and injuries at shipyards.

The ministry said Monday its inspectors interviewed over 9,000 workers between November 15th, 2007 and February 15th, 2008 at 74 shipyards in Tuzla and detected shortcomings in working conditions.

The ministry said those shipyards were fined to pay 1.9 million YTL (1 USD equals 1.2 YTL), and it decided to partially close 3 shipyards within the framework of an ongoing investigation launched upon sharp increase in work-related accidents and injuries.

The ministry said its inspectors have been working on 25 deadly accidents occurred at Tuzla shipyards, and causes of those accidents were mostly explosions, fire, electric shocks, falling, suicides, heart attacks and crashes.
