Turkey has deal to buy 25 mln-swine flu vaccine, health minister says

Turkey has made the first contract with a pharmaceutical company to import 25 million doses of swine flu vaccine, Turkish health minister said on Thursday.

Recep Akdag told reporters that first part of vaccines would arrive in Turkey by the end of this month.

Turkey is in talks with three firms to purchase vaccines, Akdag said.

"We have made a contract with one of them. We will buy 25 million doses from that firm," he said.

"We are also likely to conclude another contract this month to purchase around 18 million doses more. These vaccines will be in Turkey in the next six months," Akdag said.

Akdag stated that a total of nearly 20 million doses of swine flu vaccines would arrive in Turkey by the end of the year.

Earlier last week, Akdag had said all risk groups, especially health professionals, pregnant women, children and young people would be vaccinated against a possible swine flu outbreak.

Turkey has seen 411 swine flu cases so far. 132 swine flu patients treated in hospitals were foreigners and the rest were Turkish nationals. No deaths were reported.

25 out of 411 swine flu cases are still under observation, officials said.
