Turkey repeats commitment to EU bid before progress report

Turkey's government reiterated its commitment to the EU membership goal prior to EU Commission's Progress Report for 2009, which will be released shortly.

In a statement issued following Monday's cabinet meeting, the Turkish government said that it would work with determination towards the goal of full membership to the EU.

Justice and Development (AK) Party administration said it pursued this historic goal in both reform efforts inside Turkey and activities in international platforms.

It expressed determination to give momentum to the process, noting that it would not step back from this goal or make concessions on earned privileges.

The government said while working on a new constitution based on wide agreement, it would give priority to ratification of the Legislation on Basic Principles of Election and Electoral Rolls, foundation of the National Human Rights Agency, formation of an ombudsman's office, adoption of the Anticorruption Strategy, ratification of the action plan for fighting organised crime, and formation of 5-year road maps for both integrated border control and immigration and asylum.
