"Those destinations which have developed a new tourism offer based on the appreciation of their specific local intangible heritage will have the possibility to compete at national level and be selected as 2007 destination of excellence," the Commission announced on its web-site.

Apart from Turkey, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Romania and Spain will participate in the competition.

The winning destinations will be selected in June 2008, officials said.
