Turkey won't Hold Early Elections

Turkey will not hold early general elections despite repeated calls by the opposition, Deputy Prime Minister Abdullatif Sener told Reuters.

Turkey won't Hold Early Elections

Opposition parties want a poll in 2006 to strengthen their position in Parliament and prevent the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) from picking the next president.

"We can't go into elections in 2006. We will go into elections in 2007. We have declared this 100 times. The constitution says elections are held every five years, and we will use this time period set in the constitution," Sener said in a weekend interview.
