Turkey's EU process to 'benefit Turkish, Greek Cyprus'
The Director-General for Enlargement at the European Commission said a solution in Cyprus should be within the auspices of the UN and not the EU.
The Director-General for Enlargement at the European Commission, Michael Leigh, said Tuesday a solution in Cyprus should be within the auspices of the United Nations (UN) and not the European Union (EU).
Speaking at the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington, Michael Leigh said that a solution in Cyprus will make a 'great difference' in the whole region.
Turkey's EU process is to the benefit of both sides. Instead of focusing on hesitations, we must focus on what could be achieved as two partners, Leigh stressed.
Turkey plays a crucial role in overcoming regional clashes and in the energy field, Leigh said.
Turkey's role in facilitating dialogue between civilizations and in preventing polarization is highly important. It is high time to remind all about wide geopolitical interests related to relations between Turkey and the EU, Leigh also said.
