Turkey's Gul hopes Armenia soccer visit without pre-conditions

Turkish President Abdullah Gul said Wednesday he invited Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan to watch the return match between national teams of the two countries, but it is still unclear if Sargsyan accepted the invitation.

Turkey and Armenia will play a World Cup qualifier in the Turkish province of Bursa on October 14. Gul travelled to Yerevan to watch the first leg in September 2008.

"You know I went to Armenia without any conditions to watch the match. I wish Armenian President comes to Turkey the same way," Gul told reporters before his departure to France.

"I have invited him. (If he comes) We will show our hospitality just as he entertained us," Gul said.

However, President Gul did not elaborate on whether Sargsyan accepted his invitation.

After months of Swiss-mediated talks, Turkey and Armenia are expected to sign a protocol on October 10 to establish diplomatic ties.

Turkey and Armenia have no diplomatic ties or economic relations since Armenia declared its independence in 1991 and Turkey closed its border with Armenia after this country invaded the Upper-Karabakh region of Azerbaijan in 1992.
