Turkey's Tukcell says reached 3.5 mln mobile internet users

One of the leading GSM operators in Turkey has reached 3.5 million 3G subscribers, a company official said on Monday.

A deputy director general of Turkcell said that the company had reached 3.5 million subscribers since July 30.

"The TURKCELL VINN 3G modems we sold in the first 15 days after the mobile internet age began in Turkey were equal to those we used to sell a year," deputy director general Ekrem Yener responsible for institutional customers management.

Yener said the number of TURKCELL VINN 3G modems and notebooks they sold in two months was over 100,000.

The mobile internet age was launched in Turkey on July 30.

GSM-based mobile communication started in Turkey when Turkcell started its operations in February 1994. Turkcell signed a 25-year GSM license contract on April 27, 1998 with the Ministry of Transportation of Turkey.

Turkcell says has made 7.7 billion US dollars worth of investment in Turkey, which doesn't include the price of the license, as of June 30, 2009.
