Turkish Cypriot FM meets Turk Community representatives in Britain

Turkish Cypriot Foreign Minister Huseyin Ozgurgun who is visiting Britain to hold a series of meetings met in London with representatives of the Turkish Community in Britain.

Speaking before the meeting, Ozgurgun said the Turkish republic of Northern Cyprus was seeking a comprehensive agreement that would ensure sovereignty, political equality and full security for the Turkish Cypriots, under the current Cyprus talks.

He said the Greek Cypriot approach prevented progress in the talks noting that their position on the treaties of alliance and guaranty was unacceptable.

Ozgurgun said the Greek Cypriot side, under the pretext of EU membership, argued that the new partnership to be founded in Cyprus did not need the current guaranty system, on the grounds that it was obsolete.

Ozgurgun said even if the parties signed a treaty without the active guaranty of Turkey, it would be fanciful to think that Turkish Cypriots would vote in favour of it.
