"Now that Tassos Papadopoulos is out the race. I believe there could be a new opening on the Cyprus issue," Talat told the A.A. "Whoever wins the election we are ready to talk."

Talat also warned that if the new Greek Cypriot administration kept an uncompromising stance the division of the island would become much deeper.

"If there is going to be a settlement it will now or peace will be a dream," he said.
