"However whether or not to launch a negotiation process depends on the stance of the Greek Cypriot administration," he told participants of a conference in Aegean province of Denizli.

Talat said the two parties in the island will seek a settlement through different methods if the initiatives fail after the 2008 presidential election in the Greek Cypriot administration.

"Two peoples in Cyprus are more distant from each other and more discontent today when compared with 2004," Talat told.

Talat said the partition has started to spread from political elite to the nations.

"If this separation continues and/or worsens after the election in the Greek Cypriot administration, it can become more permanent," he also said.
