Turkish EU Minister cites 'progress' in French ties

Turkey's chief negotiator for European Union (EU) talks said on Wednesday that there were good developments in Turkish-French relations.

Turkish State Minister Egemen Bagis gave a conference on Turkey-EU relations at the Strasbourg University, and said that there were good developments in Turkey-EU relations.

Bagis visited Strasbourg to hold talks at the European Parliament and Council of Europe.

The Turkish minister referred to Turkish President Abdullah Gul's recent visit to the French capital of Paris, and his meeting with French President Nicolas Sarkozy, and said two countries had decided to set up a working group to boost cultural, social and economic relations.

Pierre Lellouche, the French secretary of state for European affairs, and Bagis will chair the working group.

"Activities like 'Season of Turkey' in France will help eliminate the prejudice against Turkey's EU membership," Bagis also said during the conference.

Bagis said that the EU definitely needed Turkey if it wanted to become a global actor.

The minister said that it would be a wrong message to exclude Turkey from the EU due to only cultural differences when it fulfilled the required criteria.

Bagis said Turkey had homework to do for EU membership, and expressed the government's determination to catch up with EU standards.

Also, Bagis referred to Turkey's role as a mediator in regional issues like Syrian-Israeli, Georgian-Russian, Pakistani-Indian, Palestinian-Israeli disputes; and said Turkey was trying to solve all problems.

"We have a responsibility to leave peace and stability to upcoming generations," he also said.

Bagis also attended a reception within the scope of "Season of Turkey" activities.

After the reception, Bagis left Strasbourg for Ankara.

Turkey is promoted with over 400 cultural, artistic and economic activities in more than 70 cities in France within the scope of the season.
