Turkish President Abdullah Gul arrived in Islamabad on Sunday for a two-day visit to mark the 60th anniversary of Turkey's diplomatic ties with Pakistan.

Gul was met at Islamabad's international airport by Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf. According to Turkish and local media reports, Gul would seek to meet with opposition leaders Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif during his visit and offer to mediate between them and Musharraf.

Sharif has threatened to boycott crucial parliamentary elections scheduled for January 8, and was scheduled to meet Bhutto on Monday to try to convince her to join him.

However, both leaders' parties continued to prepare candidates and platforms for the poll, and the boycott threats appeared to be waning as of Sunday.

Musharraf declared a state of emergency on November 3, suspending the Constitution and arresting thousands of political opponents and activists, including Supreme Court judges who he feared were going to nullify his October re-election victory.
