Turkish leftist mayor forms new political party

A Turkish mayor formed a new party, separating leftist Republican People's Party (CHP).
The new party, "Turkey Transformation Movement" (Turkiye Degisim Hareketi) will turn into a political party in the first days of 2010.
The party will be chaired by Mustafa Sarigul, the Mayor of Sisli, a town of Istanbul.
Ibrahim Hamurcu, provincial chairman of the party in Central Anatolian province of Kayseri, told a news conference that the party would be established in the first days of 2010.
"This movement targets EU criteria and aims at upgrading the standards of Turkey to the standards in Germany, Britain and France. This party will give democratic and social rights. We believe that democratic and economic deficiencies lie under the basis of Southeast and Kurdish problem. This issue should not be used as a political tool," he said.
Hamurcu said the movement was organized in 76 provinces, noting that party regulation and program was about to be concluded.
