Turkish Minister: Mersin-Urumchi railroad to shorten distance

Turkish State Minister Kursad Tuzmen said Monday that Turkey and Uygur autonomous region have complementary traits in raw materials and semi-finished products.

The "17th Urumchi International Trade Fair" kicked off on Monday in Urumchi, the capital city of Uygur autonomous region with the participation of Tuzmen.

Tuzmen is the first Turkish state minister to attend the Urumchi fair with an official invitation from the Chinese government.

Tuzmen also attended inauguration of the Turkish stand at the Urumchi fair.

25 Turkish companies and 114 Turkish businessmen are attending the Urumchi fair.

The Turkish products are being displayed on an area of 1,500 square meters, the largest area compared to other countries' sites at the fair.

Attending the "Turkish-Chinese Business Forum", Tuzmen said that the Turks and Chinese established some of the greatest civilizations during their history of 4,000 years.

"The international media refer to Turkey and China as the shining stars of the 21st century," Tuzmen stressed.

"Just as in the past, Turkey and China would reach their 'old richness'. If you subtract Chinese and Turkish history from overall history, you would be left with no history," Tuzmen noted.

"Urumchi would become an important logistics center. Turkey and the Uygur autonomous region have complementary traits in raw materials and semi-finished goods," Tuzmen said.

"We would overcome all transportation problems with a railroad from Turkey's southern province of Mersin to Urumchi. This railroad would bring down the days needed to reach Urumchi from 60 to only 10 days," Tuzmen said.

"Turkey and China need to work together to activate the Beijing-Urumchi-Mersin railway," Tuzmen added.
