Turkish parliament extends mandate for N. Iraq operations

Turkey's parliament on Tuesday extended for one year a mandate that allows its military for northern Iraq operations against on PKK bases.

The widely anticipated move coincides with a Turkish government's Kurdish initiative to end a 25-year armed conflict.

Turkish fighter jets have staged a series of strikes on PKK targets in neighbouring northern Iraq since October 2007, and in February 2008 the military sent land forces across the border to fight the outlawed group.

Erdogan, who has given few details on the measures and their timeframe, is seeking public, military and parliamentary support for his "Kurdish initiative", aimed at persuading PKK militants to lay down arms and end a violence that has killed some 40,000 people.
