In a statement at Ankara's Esenboga Airport before setting off for an official visit to Syria, Prime Minister Erdogan said Turkey has done its best in regards to EU membership.

Erdogan said Turkey's Foreign Ministry will continue its telephone diplomacy before the Dec. 11 summit while chief negotiator for the European Union Ali Babacan holds talks in Europe.

Stating Turkey was doing its best for EU membership, Erdogan criticized the opposition and other political parties for seeking profit.

Recalling the meeting held by three EU members states yesterday, Prime Minister Erdogan said yesterday's meeting was not a summit.

Erdogan stated a joint meeting by three states was held in Paris and he had spoken over the phone with German Chancellor Merkel before the meeting.

"I told her that any wrong step to be taken at the Dec. 11 Foreign Ministers meeting and Dec.14-15 summit of EU government leaders, wrong sanctions or interventions on this process would be a great mistake. I told Mrs. Merkel this clearly and she said they have good intentions about the process," Erdogan said.

Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Gul, Prime Ministry Undersecretary Omer Dincer and other officials greeted Prime Minister Erdogan off to Syria at Esenboga Airport.
