Turkish PM on 2008 economic targets

The ruling Justice & Development (AK) Party Chairman and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Tuesday growth rate would probably become 5.5 percent in 2008.

Addressing his party's group meeting in the parliament, Erdogan said they expected that current account deficit would be 8 percent of GNP in 2008.

Economic development in Turkey that was assured by AK Party government also continued in 2007, Erdogan stated.

"2008 year budget was approved in the parliament and it became a law last week. The same discipline and determination will also continue and targets will be attained in the coming period. We will keep fulfilling sound monetary policies and we will work to reach medium-term targets in the inflation rate, " he said.

Erdogan added they expected that proportion of public debt stock to GNP would drop below 40 percent at the end of this year.
