Turkish police searches TV channel in chairty fraud case

Turkish police are searching several places in the city of Istanbul regarding a German charity case.

The Ankara Chief Prosecutor's Office has launched an investigation into the German "Deniz Feneri e.V." charity, and police have raided 17 different places in Istanbul's Fatih neighborhood.

Among the searched places are the office of private Kanal 7 tv channel, a depot belonging to the charity, film production companies, and accounting offices.

Police have examined financial records and the computers of executives of Kanal 7, and copied the hard discs of computers.

No one has been detained in the operation so far.

Police will hand over the seized documents to Ankara Chief Prosecutor's Office.

In September 2008, a German court convicted three Turks of fraud for drawing off donations and using them for other purposes outside charity.

The Frankfurt State Court sentenced the three men working for the charity Deniz Feneri e.V in Germany to prison terms.

The court sentenced Mehmet Gurhan to 5 years and 10 months, Mehmet Taskan to 2 years and 9 months. Firdevsi Ermis was sentenced to one year and 10 months, which was suspended on probation.
