GUL AND ERDOGAN GIVE CLEAR MESSAGES ON CROSS-BORDER OPERATION

Turkish President Abdullah Gul and Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan gave clear messages in regard to cross-border operation into the north of Iraq. President Gul said, "fight against terrorism continues. There is a great cooperation among all institutions of the state. What was required has been done." On the other hand, Erdogan said the operation was not conducted against territorial integrity of Iraq. "Our enemy is the PKK which threatens our national unity. We are using the right given by the international law to us," he said.


DIFFERENT INCENTIVE FOR EVERY PROVINCE

Industry and Trade Minister Zafer Caglayan said there would be different incentives for every province in Turkey. "We are planning to complete our works on incentives for provinces in 2008. Incentives will be determined according to the sector or sectors which have great importance for the province," Caglayan said.

DTP CHAIRMAN DEMIRTAS ARRESTED

Democratic Society Party (DTP) Chairman Demirtas who was taken into custody under charges of arranging a fake certificate of disability for discharge in order to be exempt from military service was arrested and sent to prison by a military court.

"He returned to Turkey with his own will. It was apparent that he would not run. His detention is wrong," said Ahmet Turk, a deputy from (DTP).


APPOINTMENT REBUKE FROM GOVERNOR YILMAZ

Durmus Yilmaz, Governor of the Turkish Central Bank said they proposed two people for the two vacant member seats in the Bank and complained that nobody was appointed. "The delay is not nice," said Yilmaz.

700 COMMANDOS CROSS INTO NORTH OF IRAQ

Following the bombing of PKK camps by Turkish F-16 jet fighters, blue berets crossed into the north of Iraq. A military cross-border operation was carried out.

Information that PKK terrorists were escaping through Zap, Haftanin and Avashin regions was received. According to intelligence the US provided, the terrorists had gathered around Hakurk to infiltrate into Turkey.

The commandos crossed 5 km into the north of Iraq on Monday, it was reported. Kurdish groups and foreign news agencies announced that the number of Turkish soldiers crossing the border was around 700.

Turkish commandos who had cast a heavy blow to PKK returned to Turkey.


GALATASARAY TO TAKE ON AUSTRIA WIEN

Turkish football team Galatasaray will take on Austria Wien in its most important task on Wednesday in an UEFA Cup Group H match. Galatasaray has to win the match in order to advance to the next round. However that may even not be enough. If Greek team Panionios --who is in third row one point ahead of Galatasaray-- wins against French, Bordeaux --who guaranteed to finish as the leader- Galatasaray will be eliminated no matter what result it gets.

HOT PURSUIT IN IRAQ

Turkish Armed Forces (TSK) which found out that a group of PKK terrorists tried to infiltrate into the Turkish border inflicted a heavy blow on the group. After air strikes on the Mount Kandil on Sunday, TSK also waged an operation to territories of Iraq. According to the statement released by the TSK on Tuesday night, the armed forces dealt a heavy blow on a group of terrorists trying to infiltrate into Turkish border after a hot pursuit. PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that the army was doing what was necessary on the matter when he replied to questions.

A military court arrested Nurettin Demirtas, the chairman of the Democratic Society Party (DTP), on charges of arranging a fake certificate of disability for discharge in order to be exempt from military service.

HOT PURSUIT WITH 700 SOLDIERS

Turkish troops inflicted a heavy blow on terrorist organization PKK in the north of Iraq. Turkish Armed Forces said in a statement that it inflicted heavy losses on a group of PKK terrorists in a small-scale operation by ground forces. According the local sources, 700 soldiers participated in the operation.

President Abdullah Gul said a comprehensive operation has been conducting against terrorists. "What is required in fight against terrorism is being done. Operation into the north of Iraq has been conducted successfully," Gul stated.

DTP CHAIRMAN DEMIRTAS ARRESTED

Democratic Society Party (DTP) chairman Nurettin Demirtas is under arrest on charges of using a fake health report to avoid military service. A military court ordered that Demirtas be arrested and put into jail on Tuesday.


WOMAN DIRECTOR-GENERAL TO SEKERBANK

Ms. Meric Ulusahin will start to serve as the director-general of Turkey's Sekerbank as of February 1st, 2008. Ulusahin will become the third woman bank director-general in Turkey. Others are Piraye Antika, director-general of HSBC and Cim Guzelaydinli of Tekstilbank.

TRNC OPENS OFFICE IN ROME

Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) also opened an office in Rome, capital of Italy after the United States, Britain, Belgium and Qatar. TRNC Deputy PM & Foreign Minister Turgay Avci said, "we will boost our activities in the areas of trade, culture, tourism and education in Italy through this office."


4 PERCENT INFLATION RATE FOR 2010

Turkish Central Bank Governor said that the bank targeted to reduce to 4 percent inflation rate in 2010, the same with levels previously set for 2008 and 2009. Yilmaz also said that they would keep implementing the floating exchange rate regime next year.

Durmus Yilmaz Governor of Turkish Central Bank announced the bank's monetary and exchange rate policy on Tuesday; "The inflation target for the next three years will be 4 percent. If the target is missed the necessary measures will be communicated to the government with a letter.


COMMANDOS CROSSED THE BORDER

Turkish military Commandoes crossed the (Turkish-Iraqi) border following the air strike launched on the PKK's main camp in the Kandil Mountain and other targets south of the border by Turkish Armed Forces(TSK). Turkish General Staff said that a group of terrorists trying to cross the Turkish-Iraqi border upon which a small-scale operation was conducted and a blow was dealt to the terrorists.

International agencies announced that around 700 Turkish soldiers crossed the border. However ambiguous news were serviced all day regarding the number of troops and the location of operations.
