Two Abu Sayyaf commanders were killed Thursday in a clash with government troops on a southern Philippine island, a marine general said Thursday.
Brigadier General Ramiro Alivio said the fighting erupted when marines encountered 20 Abu Sayyaf rebels in Akbar town in Basilan province, 900 kilometres south of Manila.
Alivio claimed the marines also recovered two high-powered rifles, a machine gun and assorted ammunition left behind by the fleeing fighters.
The troops were conducting patrols in some areas in Basilan.
Security forces remained clueless on the whereabouts of Bossi and his kidnappers nearly a month after the priest was seized in Payao town in nearby Zamboanga Sibugay province on June 10.
Alivio said that so far, there were no indications that Bossi has been brought to Basilan.
Prominent Italian legislator Margherita Boniver arrived in Manila on Thursday to help Philippine authorities secure the safe release of the 57-year-old Bossi.
