Two killed as Abbas forces raid in Hamas in West Bank

A policeman and a Hamas member were killed on Thursday when Palestinian forces loyal to President Mahmoud Abbas raided a Hamas house in the occupied West Bank, sparking a gunbattle.

Adnan Damiri, spokesman for the Palestinian Authority's security forces, said exchanges of fire erupted after policemen encircled a house in the city of Qalqilya to arrest "suspected Hamas members".

He said a policeman was killed.

A Hamas spokesman in the Gaza Strip said the operations had "killed all chances" for the success of the talks Egypt has been mediating.

Fawzi Barhoum, a Hamas spokesman, said the West Bank raids were part of a "plot ... to finish off resistance and the Hamas movement".

The talks are scheduled to resume in Cairo in July.

Six Palestinians -- two Hamas fighters, three policemen and a bystander -- were killed in Qalqilya on Sunday.
