United Arab Emirates (UAE) President Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed al-Nahyan arrived in Damascus Sunday for talks with Syrian President Bashar Assad on the situation in the region and ways of promoting bilateral relations.

Al-Nahyan, who is accompanied by a high-level delegation, was greeted at Damascus airport by Assad.

The UAE president is on a three-nation tour that would take him to Algeria and France.

Syria's official Sana news agency said the visit came amid "exceptional circumstances through which the region is passing, a matter which entails more coordination to consolidate Arab solidarity and to undertake united stands capable to deal with regional and international changes."

The UAE is considered the biggest trading partner with Syria and economic relations between the two countries have gone beyond tarde to include joint investment ventures, joint banks and other projects in the insurance domain, Sana reported.

Trade between the two countries was valued at around 12.89 billion Syrian pounds (254 million dollars) in 2006.

The figure is expected to increase soon as UAE companies are working on multi-billion-dollar investment and real-estate projects in Syria, and a number of UAE banks have opened branches in the country.
