The US Department of Homeland Security plans to load weapons arsenal with futuristic light saber-like devices, officials said Thursday.
The Department of Homeland Security spent USD one million to develop the non-fatal crime-fighting device nicknamed the "puke-ray" or the "light saber", seemingly inspired by Hollywood science fiction films like "Star Wars" and "Minority Report".
The LED (light-emitting diode) Incapacitator resembles a common flashlight but emits a flashing display of red, blue and green lights certain wavelengths and light frequency that causes temporarily blindness and can lead to vertigo and nausea.
Officials are looking its potential for taking-down criminals, terrorists, or unruly crowds.
"The light could be used to make a bad guy turn away or shut his eyes, giving authorities enough time to tackle the suspect and apply the cuffs, while sparing the lives of passers-by, hostages or airline passengers," Homeland Security officials said in press remarks.
The California-based company developing the device, Intelligent Optical Systems, plans to test the effectiveness of the device this fall.
If the tests are successful the Department of Homeland Security hopes the device to be used by policemen, border agents, air marshals, and National Guardsmen nationwide by 2010.
