US expresses concerns about Hezbollah-Aoun Understanding Paper as more Lebanese back it

US interferes developments in Lebanon

The United States expressed concern about the Understanding reached between Hezbollah and the Free Patriotic Movement while more Lebanese backed the agreement saying it strengthens the internal unity.

As more internal voices welcomed the understanding reached between Hezbollah and the Free Patriotic Movement, the US administration seemed unhappy about the agreement that strengthens the people's unity and ease tension between the Lebanese. US Assistant Secretary of State Near Eastern Affaires David Welch expressed concern about any Lebanese-Lebanese understandings that hinder the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1559.

Welch said we had always called for a Lebanese dialogue to make progress toward ending the state-within-a state status that one of these militias in particular presently enjoys in a reference to the Resistance Arms.

Commenting on the dual understanding, MP Walid Jumblat adopted a similar position. He called for disarming Hezbollah and stopping the resistance that works to liberate Shebaa Farms that are still occupied by the Israeli enemy.

Jumblatt said "The ownership of these farms is Lebanese but Lebanon does not exercise sovereignty there and I recently obtained maps showing that they were added to Lebanese territorial claims in 2001 and were absent in 1962. We refuse to allow this front to remain open until we have proved Lebanon's claim to these farms and secured their liberation just as we refuse to allow Hezbollah to maintain a military wing separate from the army. The solution lies in the dismantling of Hezbollah's armed wing and its integration in the army, like we did with other militias in 1991."

But the Lebanese government has so far made a distinction between Hezbollah and the rest, referring to the former as a "resistance" force against Israeli occupation.

Foreign minister Fawzi Salloukh reiterated that position during a visit to Maronite Patriarch Nasrallah Sfeir. Salloukh said the resistance is not a militia and the issue of its weapons should be resolved through dialogue. He stressed the important part of resolution 1559 regarding the Syrian forces' withdrawal has been implemented, and the remaining part is an internal issue. Asked about the memorandum of the understanding Salloukh said that we welcome any positive step that serves the country and aims at establishing stability and peace.

For his part Former minister Adnan Al-Kassar hailed the Hezbollah-Aoun Agreement. After a visit to the Head of the Free Patriotic Movement Al-Kassar said the understanding had many positive points.

Loyalty to the Resistance Parliamentary Bloc also welcomed the understanding saying it reflects responsibility, credibility and seriousness in dealing with the country's priorities.

Meanwhile Lebanon's daily Al-Mustaqbal owned by MP Saad Hariri acknowledged that it deleted by mistake a line from the agreement made between Aoun and Hezbollah. The part was a denunciation of the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafic Hariri and the string of assassinations and assassination attempts that followed. Hizbullah Secretary General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah said during a speech at Thursday's Ashoura commemoration that he felt sorry some outlets tended to cut and delete parts of the agreement.
