Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari said the two sides had agreed to hold their fourth round of ambassador-level talks in Baghdad, but the timing was still being discussed.
However, a meeting of security, military and diplomatic experts would be held on Dec. 18 to discuss technical issues, he said.
"This would be a technical meeting a follow up to the last meeting of the security experts," he said.
Zebari expressed confidence about plans for another round of talks between the nations' ambassadors.
"We are getting positive signals actually both from Iran and from Washington," he said.
Zebari's comments came a day after Iran said it was studying an Iraqi proposal to hold security talks with the U.S. in January.
