US protests embassy attack in Serbia to UN Security Council

The United States called on the UN Security Council to condemn attacks setting on fire its embassy in Belgrade by demonstrators unhappy with the US support of Kosovo's independence.

US Ambassador to the UN Zalmay Khalilzad told reporters he would called for a statement from the 15-nation council to condemn the act.

"The US embassy in Belgrade is a sovereign territory," Khalilzad said. "The Serbian government is responsible for the protection of diplomatic facilities."

The council was convened to discuss the situation at the border of Eritrea and Ethiopia, but council members are usually free raise any issues of interests to their governments.

Hooligans set fire to the US embassy and also attacked the Turkish, German, Croation, Canadian and other embassies in Belgrade during a massive demonstrations against Kosovo's independence.

The Turkey, US, France, Britain and Germany are the among the countries that have recognized Kosovo's independence.
