US wrongly identified Bosnian fighter as convicted terrorist

A former Islamic fighter during Bosnia's 1992-1995 war, who lost his Bosnian citizenship last year, was wrongfully identified by the U.S. as a convicted terrorist, an official report said Friday.

"Imad Al-Hussein, who is also know as Abu Hamza al-Suri, was incorrectly identified as convicted terrorist Abu Hamza al-Masri," said the Bosnia section of the 2007 U.S. Country Reports on Terrorism, published on the U.S. embassy in Bosnia Web site.

"We deeply regret this error," it said.

Abu Hamza al-Masri is an Egyptian national currently serving a seven-year prison sentence in the U.K. and isn't known to have ever had Bosnian citizenship.

Al-Hussein, of Syrian origin, was granted Bosnian citizenship 12 years ago and has since married a Bosnian woman with whom he has three children. He arrived in Bosnia during the 1992-1995 war to fight with the Bosnian army's El Mujahed unit.

Citing irregularities, a special state commission last year revoked the Bosnian citizenship of hundreds of foreigners including Al-Hussein and a number of other former wartime Muslim fighters after US pressure.

Al-Hussein's appeals for permanent residence and asylum have been rejected on the grounds that his presence in Bosnia is a "threat" to national security. On Jan. 22, authorities gave him 15 days to leave the country or face deportation.

However, Al-Hussein simultaneously appealed to Bosnia's constitutional court and the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, accusing the authorities of breaching his human rights.

The ECHR subsequently ordered Bosnian authorities to refrain from deporting him until a Bosnian court ruled in his case.
