The fourth Summit of World Mayors will be hosted by the Ýstanbul Metropolitan Municipality this coming weekend and is intended to provide a forum for mayors from all over the world to come together and debate important global and local problems.
The summit will take place at Ýstanbul's Hilton Convention Center. The opening will be on Friday, April 13, with speeches by Ýstanbul Mayor Kadir Topbaþ, Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov, Spanish Minister of Industry, Tourism and Trade Joan Clos and Greek Minister of Health and Social Cooperation Dimitris Avramopoulos.
The first panel discussion at the summit will be "City Diplomacy: A Model for Peace." Its moderator will be World Diplomatic Institute General-Secretary Aristidis Calogeropoulos-Stratis. Panel participants will include Krasnodar Governor Alexander Tkachev, South Bay Florida Mayor Clarence E. Anthony, Bursa Mayor Hikmet Þahin, Chamber of Local Authorities of the Council of Europe Congress of Local and Regional Authorities President Dr. Ian Micallef, Barcelona Deputy Mayor Dr. Jose Ignacio Cuervo, Ankara Mayor Melih Gökçek, Ho Chi Minh City Deputy Mayor Nguyen Trung Tin and The Hague Mayor Wim Deetman.
"Global cities: Models for Multicultural Understanding," is the second panel discussion and will be moderated by respected Turkish historian Professor Ýlber Ortaylý. Alliance of civilizations
The third panel will be "Alliance between Civilizations: Cities and the Role of Local Administration." The moderator for this panel will be United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) General Secretary Selahattin Yýldýrým. The panel will include participation by Beirut Mayor Abdel Meneem Al-Ariss, Arab Cities Organization Director Abdulrahman Al-Duaij, Tabriz Mayor Alireza Noveen, Olof Palme International Foundation President Anna Balletbo, Eriha Mayor and Deputy President of the Palestinian Municipalities Union Hassan Saleh, State Minister Professor Mehmet Aydýn, Banjul Mayor Njie-Sanneh Mam Sai, former Catalan Mayor Pasqual Maragall, Pecs Mayor Peter Tasnadi and Chamber of Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe Congress of Local and Regional Authorities President Yavuz Mildon.
The second day of the summit will include a fourth panel discussion titled "Millennium Development Goals and Cities." This panel's moderator will be Local Agenda 21 Nations Coordinator Sadun Emre.
