'XXX' Internet Domain Rejected

The body responsible for the globalcoordination of the Internet's system of unique identifiers on Friday, March30, rejected plans to establish a new ".XXX" domain for racy orsexually explicit websites.

"This decision was the result of very carefulscrutiny and consideration of all the arguments," chairman of the InternetCorporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) Vint Cerf said, reportedAgence France-Presse (AFP).

"That consideration has led a majority of theBoard to believe that the proposal should be rejected."

ICANN is an internationally organized, publicbenefit non-profit body responsible for the global coordination of theInternet's system of unique identifiers.

These include domain names (like .org, .museum andcountry codes like .UK), as well as the addresses used in a variety of Internetprotocols.

Computers use these identifiers to reach each otherover the Internet.

No Panacea

Cerf said an ".XXX domain" is not apanacea for pornography.

"It would not resolve the issue of how toprotect vulnerable members of the community," he said.

ICANN would also be obligated "to acquire aresponsibility related to content and conduct," it said in a statementafter a board meeting.

Two USsenators last year proposed USlegislation that would establish the new ".XXX" domain.

The bill proposed by senators Mark Pryor and MaxBaucus, both Democrats, called upon the US Department of Commerce to excludesexually charged content from established website domain names such as .gov,.com, .org, .net, and .edu.

Baucus said that an .XXX domain would help parentsuse filtering software to keep children from accessing pornographic sites, andwould help prevent hapless Internet users from inadvertently stumbling ontosexually-explicit websites that they would prefer not to see.

Internet porn is widespread in the West. Accordingto a recent survey comScore Media Metrix, two in five Internet users visited anadult site.

It further found that 87% of university studentspolled have virtual sex mainly using Instant Messenger, webcam, and telephone.

There were 63.4 million visitors to adult websites, constituting 37.2% of the Internet audience.
