YÖK gets chairman against headscarf ban
Professor Ozcan holds the belief that "if the headscarf is banned at universities, the number of the people who wears a headscarf will decrease."

The president Gul assigned an unexpected person as chairman of YOK (Higher Education Council): Professor Yusuf Ziya Ozcan, TUBITAK chairman counselor.

President Abdullah Gul did not wait long to appointment the new YOK (Higher Education Council) chairman.

The term of duty for Professor Erdogan Tezic ended on Saturday and Gul made an announcement, stating that "Professor Yusuf Ziya Özcan has been assigned as the chairman of YOK (Higher Education Council)."

Ozcan is a lecturer in the Sociology department of the Middle East Technical University and works as TUBITAK's (Social and Human Sciences Research Group Executive Committee) secretary.

As a response to the statement by Tarhan Erdem that "if the turban is not banned at universities, everyone will wear headscarves," Ozcan said: "society will not be forced to do anything. Those who do not wear headscarves have unnecessary fears. If the ban is lifted, there will be more liberal democracy."
