Zana Meets Talabani in Northern Iraq

Ex-MP of the defunct pro-Kurdish Democracy Party (DEP) Leyla Zana on Friday evening met Iraqi President Jalal Talabani in northern Iraq where she is on a four-day visit of the region.

Leyla Zana visited Talabani at the offices of the Kurdistan Patriotic Union (PUK) located in the northern Iraqi town of Suleymaniya. A pro-PUK TV channel claimed Zana sought Talabani's assistance in efforts to put an end to the violence that has escalated recently in southeast Turkey.

Zana, who began her visit on Monday, met Massoud Barzani, leader of Kurdish-governed north Iraq, in the town of Salahaddin on Tuesday. Clashes between the Turkish military and the terrorist organization Kurdish Workers' Party (PKK) have increased in recent months.

The Turkish and Iranian armies are currently preparing major military operations targeting PKK terrorists along the border between the two countries. In recent civil disturbances in southeast Turkey which also spread to Istanbul, a total of 16 people lost their lives.
