Excavations at the Ancient City of Soloi Pompeiopolis in southern province of Mersin are taking place at the "Road with Pillars" and "Soli Hill Town" with the cooperation of the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism and Dokuz Eylul University.
Speaking to the AA, a professor of Archaeology Department of the Dokuz Eylul University in Izmir and chairperson of the excavations at Soloi Pompeiopolis, Prof. Dr. Remzi Yagci said that the 12th excavation at the site began on July 15 and that they aimed at making new discoveries in the ancient city.
The excavations at Soloi Pompeiopolis go on with a crew of 25 experts. We aim at bringing out into the air the "Road with Pillars", Dr. Yagci underlined.
We have noticed that a major earthquake had taken place at where the road is. We believe that there are important sculptures in the region. Those sculptures we have discovered to date are being displayed at the Mersin Museum, Dr. Yagci said.
We intend to make the region an "Open Air Museum", Dr. Yagci also said.
