Palestinian students in Hebrew University of Jerusalem have embarked on Cultural Heritage Day which they see as a chance to keep their tradition alive in the territories under Israeli occupation since 1967.
In the annual event, Palestinian students wear their local clothes, pass examples of Palestinian cuisine around to visitors and present traditional household goods. Palestinian musicians trained in the university took the stage and perform traditional music.
Despite the limited number of Palestinian students in the university, they organized the event annually to which they attached great importance and consider it as a way to preserve their cultural heritage and bring traditions into future despite severe restrictions under Israeli occupation.
In Jerusalem where there are only a few organizations aiming to present Palestinian culture, the Cultural Heritage Day, hold in the university also attracts interest of non-student Palestinian visitors where they can find a rare chance to enjoy their traditions.
In Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Israeli’s second oldest university founded in 1925, around one thousand Palestinian students enrolled out of university’s 20 thousand students.
