Renowned Turkish stage actor Erol Günaydın died on Monday at the age 79 at a hospital in İstanbul's Kadıköy district.
Günaydın's death was announced by his daughter Günfer Günaydın in her Twitter feed.
Günaydın, who was born in 1933 in the Black Sea province of Trabzon, was a notable “meddah” -- storyteller and impersonator in traditional Turkish theater -- and one of the last representatives of the traditional Turkish folk theater genre known as “ortaoyunu.”
The famous actor received the Honor Award at last year's İstanbul Universities Theater Festival, becoming the highlight of the festival's ninth edition.
