Turkey became a member of the sub-committee to be constituted for the application of an agreement which was prepared by UNESCO in 1970 to take a more active role in UNESCO’s fight against historical artifacts smuggling.
The extraordinary meeting of party states about UNESCO’s agreement of ‘Illegal Export-Import of Cultural Entities and Prevention and Prohibition of Property Transfer’ was held in Paris on Monday.
Turkey was elected one of the 18 members of the sub-committee in the voting.
Greece, Italy, Bulgaria, Croatia, Romania, Mexico, Peru, Ecuador, Pakistan, China, Japan, Nigeria, Chad, Madagascar, Egypt, Morocco and Oman were elected members of the sub-committee other than Turkey.
The agreement has a key mean which can be applied in solution of international matters about illegal export and import of cultural entities. Many countries having cultural richness like Turkey suffer from historical artifacts smuggling.
