Istanbul's famous historical marketplace, Kapalicarsi (Grand Bazaar), will celebrate the 550th anniversary of its opening in 2011.

The marketplace, which was constructed upon an order by Sultan Mehmed II the Conqueror in 1461, will celebrate its 550th birthday with a series of cultural events.

Kapalicarsi (Grand Bazaar) in Istanbul is one of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world, with more than 58 covered streets and thousands of shops.

The marketplace is well known for its jewelry, pottery, spice, and carpet shops. Many of the stalls in the bazaar are grouped by the type of goods, with special areas for leather coats and gold jewelry.

The bazaar contains two "bedestens" (domed masonry structures built for storage and safe keeping) and it was vastly enlarged in the 16th century, during the reign of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent.

In 1894, the bazaar underwent a major restoration following an earthquake.
