The recipients of the annual President's Culture and Art Grand Awards for 2010 were honored in a ceremony at the Çankaya presidential palace.

President Abdullah Gül presented this year's President's Culture and Art Grand Awards to İstanbul Modern -- one of Turkey's outstanding museums dedicated in its entirety to contemporary art -- internationally acclaimed contemporary Turkish artist Ergin İnan and historian Cemal Kafadar.

“It is a fact that Turkey has witnessed a large number of cultural, artistic and scientific activities in recent years,” Gül said in his opening remarks at the ceremony.

“Today, I see this in Turkey: It is becoming a country whose prestige and value increases in every sense. It is not only about its economy and political significance; but its activities in culture, the arts and science,” he continued. Stressing the importance of freedom and democracy in laying the foundations for cultural inheritance, Gül said that as the president of Turkey, he will always be the protector of these values.

Gül chose the recipients of the awards from a list of nominees previously proposed by the prize committee. The awards are aimed at recognizing both Turkish and foreign nationals as well as institutions that make important contributions to Turkish culture and honoring them in the name of the state to encourage such contributions.

Before receiving his award, Kafadar, a professor of Turkish Studies in Harvard University's history department, shared his concerns regarding a railway bridge to be built over the Haliç (Golden Horn). The bridge would damage İstanbul's historical assets, Kafadar said. He also thanked the president, the jury members and his family.

Oya Eczacıbaşı, the chair of İstanbul Modern's board, took to the stage to receive the President's Culture and Art Grand Award in Culture and Art Institutions. She said they believe that İstanbul Modern was granted the award as a symbol of trust in the institution's improvement and future.

İnan also expressed his gratitude for being honored with the award.

The president congratulated the award recipients for their contributions to cultural and artistic life in Turkey and, following the speeches, presented the awards to the recipients.
