106 rescued from sinking boat off Australia

Rescue teams have delivered 106 people to safety from a sinking boat headed for Australia.

The boat, carrying asylum-seekers hoping to reach Australian shores, sank nearly 200 km off Christmas Island, where an Australian detention camp for asylum-seekers is located.

It was not immediately clear whether more people were missing. The maritime authority had earlier estimated that there were 105 people on board.

Hundreds have died in recent years while attempting the boat journey to Australia, prompting its government to announce last month it would not give asylum-seekers status to those arriving by boat.
