About 2,000 anti-government protesters massed on a main road leading to Bangkok's commercial centre on Saturday, about 2 km from an area held by troops, a Reuters witness said.

The "red shirt" protesters in the Klong Toey area burned tyres and hurled Molotov cocktails and troops fired automatic weapons into the air from afar to try to force the demonstrators to disperse.

The U.S. Embassy will soon issue a new alert urging its citizens against any travel to Thailand's capital, the embassy spokesman said.

"Before we were advising against all non-essential travel to Bangkok. Now we are asking for Americans to stay away from Bangkok, essential travel or not," Michael Turner, told Reuters.
